Family Medicine in Honduras
Did you know that Honduras is one of the last remaining Latin American countries that does not recognize Family Medicine as a specialty? Family Medicine is particularly important in missionary medicine because it is the only specialty qualified to provide comprehensive health care for people of all ages. A Family Practitioner also acts as an advocate for the patient, helping him or her to navigate the existing health care system. We at Hospital Yojoa believe that adding Family Practice as a specialty would greatly strengthen the health care system in Honduras. Therefore, Hospital Yojoa is dedicated to applying for permission to start a Family Medicine residency program. Our team was recently able to meet with the dean of the Honduran National Autonomous University Medical School to introduce him to our project. Please pray for our team to continue to be favorably received by the existing Honduran medical community!
In other news, we are very excited to announce that the Yojoa ground team will be growing by another missionary family in the fall. Gabriel Yoder is in construction management and previously lived in the Yojoa area for 5 years, so he is fluent in Spanish and has established relationships with a lot of locals. He will be coming to lead our construction efforts along with Max Anderson, our architect. Joining him will be his wife Hillarey and their four children. Please pray for a smooth transition for their family.
We have officially started our capital campaign for Hospital Yojoa and recently sent out booklets about the project. Do you know someone who is interested in joining with us? Would you like to share some booklets with family and friends? Please let us know by emailing hospitalyojoa@gmail.com.
